Expert Review :
The title is derived from a small hamlet located four miles NW of Sharpsburg, Maryland. The novel’s setting is in the mid 1950’s and it is based on true events and real characters.
Helen Foreman, a lovely 35 year old mother with eight children, makes another lonely decision in her quest to bring comfort and love to her children. At the same time she is struggling to provide them with food and shelter. She should not have to make this decision alone. She has a husband who makes a decent salary, but he always finds it more convenient to live out his own lifestyle and stay in the city, living comfortably. While there, he knows he is free to ignore his responsibilities: his wife, his children, and their hardships. Only on Saturday night, after the taverns are closed, does he arrive for his brief appearance.
Tommytown the novel is not a Beaver Cleaver Meets Opie story. This is drama with a capital “D”. This family lived in sheer poverty and no sorcerer is going to show up and wave a magic wand to make all the mother’s troubles disappear. This story is about real people. If the troubles are going to disappear it is the Mother that will make them go away, no one else.
It takes the traumatic illness of her son, Barry, to make Helen understand that her husband will never take on the responsibilities of being a real father to her children. This sorrowful fact eludes Helen throughout Tommytown until in the end she must face the awful truth. Does she do it alone or does she continue with her belief that a father, even a callous father, is better than no father at all? Again, Helen must make one more decision.
